Obituary – Ruby Jean Owens

Ruby Jean (Kelly) Owens was born February 13, 1942, in Iowa City, Iowa to Neil and Luella (Cover) Kelly, and passed away peacefully in her sleep on March 10, 2019, in Indianola, Iowa.
Jean spent her early childhood years in Van Wert, Iowa where she attended elementary school. In 1953, Jean and her siblings moved to Leon, Iowa where they were supported solely by their mother. While in Leon, she met the love of her lifetime, Clyde Marion Owens, who lived two blocks away from her home. Marion and Jean married on June 25, 1960, and moved to Des Moines, Iowa to be closer to Marion’s job at Bookey Packing Plant. At that time Jean began working as a typist for Hawkeye Securities. Marion was drafted into the United States Army in 1962, and was stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska. Jean joined him there and made many life, long friends. After Marion was discharged he and Jean moved to Indianola, Iowa and started their family. Daughter, Jodi Lynn, was born June 13, 1964. They moved into their newly built home in December of 1965, where the couple lived at the time of Jean’s death. Son, Daniel Joseph, was born November 24, 1968, and the family was complete.
Jean’s love for her family knew no bounds. She treasured time spent quietly at home and was a homemaker, wife, and mother until her children were both in school full time. At that time she began her career as a school cook for Indianola Schools at Emerson, Middle School, and Indianola High School. She enjoyed seeing the children each day and her warmth, sweetness, and beautiful smile made her memorable to many. She retired as the Kitchen Manager at Emerson and treasured those memories. In addition to her family, Jean enjoyed making porcelain dolls and gifted many close friends with a beautiful keepsake.
Jean had a great passion for photography and memorialized every holiday, family reunion, celebration, and even every day of life with her camera by taking photos of those she loved. She spent many hours printing, organizing, and documenting each photo. Her talent has provided many families, including her own, with many pictures of good memories and happy times. It always pleased her to see a photo she took in a family album, on display in their home, in the newspaper, or posted on a Facebook page. She spared no time or expense making other people happy.
Her thoughtfulness, kindness, sweetness, faithfulness, and goodness are her legacy. The world felt like a better place with her in it. She had a beautiful smile and never spoke an unkind word about anyone. Her quiet strength and the sweetness in her soul never waivered.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Clyde Marion Owens of Indianola, Iowa; daughter, Jodi Bradshaw of Indianola; son, Dan (Jody) Owens of Mercer, Missouri; grandchildren, Nicholas, Valerie, Tommy, and Delaney Bradshaw, Courtney (Cody) Scroggie, and Bailey Owens; great grandson, Bowen Michael Scroggie; siblings, Larry (Ruth) Kelly of Lamoni, Iowa, Jerry (Sue) Kelly of Leon, Iowa, Ginger (Bill) Dutemple of New Virginia, Iowa; and other relatives and friends. Following her death, she was greeted by her mother, sister, Gloria Diane Kelly, son-in-law, Thomas Bradshaw, and granddaughter, Macey Lynn Owens.
The family wishes to thank everyone for their kind phone calls, cards, and concern during Jean’s brief illness these last two months. The family would like to thank Wendy, Mary and all the other caregivers at Good Samaritan in Indianola. Special thanks to Laurie and Megan at St. Croix Hospice for their loving care for Jean and their patience and kindness to her family. Jean is loved by many and missed very much.
