Obituary – Trenton Allan Helton

Trenton Allan Helton was born September 1, 1986, to Robert Allan and Mary Jane (Boswell). He left this world at age 33, on Sunday, March 22, 2020, after a long and courageous battle with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Although he passed as a young man, he inspired so many and radiated his love of Christ to everyone.
Trent grew up on a farm at Leon, Iowa alongside his siblings, Brodi and Hayes. He attended school and graduated from Central Decatur High School in 2005. Through the help of family, loving friends, and caregivers, he attended Iowa State University in Ames. Trent studied psychology and social work so he could help others, as so many had helped him.
Music was Trent’s life. He loved listening to all kinds of music; Christian, country, hard rock, reggae, and even classical. Trent also was a history buff, especially Biblical history, and everyone wanted Trent on their trivia team. At an early age, Trent adopted the Dallas Cowboys as his team; through winning and losing seasons he was always a loyal fan. Football was a way for him to gather friends and family, as he orchestrated several Fantasy Football Leagues, using the name “Witten in the Stars”.
Trent never let his disability hinder his involvement or sense of humor, with his unwavering motivation and the help of others he was able to achieve so much. Throughout his school years he was involved in many sports and extracurriculars and was the fondest of youth group, FFA, and football. In college he lived in the dorms and apartments with friends. Trent loved going to concerts, tailgating, watching movies, playing his Xbox, and attending church.
As an adult, he continued to inspire others and be a spiritual resource for his friends and family. When Trent became unable to attend church, he sponsored two children in Africa and donated to several faith-based organizations. He was loved by so many and influenced every life he touched. Trent often said his nephew, Sullivan, was the light of his life. He was Sully’s baptismal sponsor and will forever be his spiritual guardian.
Trent was a rock in his family and community and his wish was to have his legacy be his love of God. Through many prayers, Trent was given the idea to start a group on Facebook, Spotlight Scripture, to strengthen the faith of believers as well as spread the Gospel to the rest of the world. The scripture he lived his life by was Romans 6:23, “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
Heaven gained more than we lost.
Preceding him in death was his beloved “Papa” Bill Boswell, to whom he was so excited to get to Heaven and see. Other grandparents preceding him include Blair Applegate and Gary Easton. Survivors include his parents, Mary Jane Hunt and husband Kevin of Pleasant Hill, Iowa, and Allan Helton and wife Sherrie of Pella, Iowa; siblings, Brodi Duer and husband Tanner of Windsor Heights, Iowa, and Hayes Applegate of Altoona, Iowa; nephew, Sullivan Duer; grandma, Kaye Easton of Pella; aunts and uncles, Ronnie and Corby Boswell, Andy and Dena Boswell, Lyle and Joni Helton, Phil and Kate Easton; step-parent, Bill Applegate; his longtime supporter and friend, Molly Miller; and his step-siblings, cousins, and other relatives and many, many friends.

A private funeral will take place at Slade – O’Donnell Funeral Home in Leon, Iowa with burial following in Davis City Cemetery, Davis City, Iowa. A public Celebration of Life Service will be held at a later date. Donations may be given to the Trent Helton Scholarship Memorial Fund.
