Obituary - Theodore Dale Skinner

Theodore Dale Skinner, age 92, of Leon, Iowa, son of Guy and Ruth (McCleary) Skinner was born June 29, 1927, in rural Decatur County, Iowa. He went to be with the Lord on February 16, 2020, near Kingsville, Texas.

Ted, as he was known, grew up on a farm southwest of High Point, Iowa. In the icy winter of 1936-37, he learned to ice skate to country school, the easiest way to get there at that time. He graduated from Leon High School in 1944. After attending Iowa State College for a time, Ted married Barbara Robison at the Loving Chapel United Methodist Church in Leon, Iowa on October 2, 1949. They made their home on a farm north of High Point for over 40 years, where they raised their three children, Jeanne, Norman, and Duane, and enjoyed a balance of work, love, and play as the way of life that they loved. He was always practical and innovative.

Their three children were 4-H members with Ted being a 4-H leader for many years. He also served on the 4-H Extension Council for several years. He loved boating with his family on Lake of the Ozarks; he enjoyed water skiing himself for over 30 years.

After retirement Ted and Barbara enjoyed traveling, having gone to all 50 states and enjoyed 30 winters in the south. Among the many activities that he enjoyed were square dancing, hunting, listening to country music, playing the chord organ to accompany his daughter, and flying with his two sons. He especially enjoyed the good times with his wife, children, and grandchildren at special family events.

Ted was a devout Christian and had attended High Point Church regularly since he was a small child. He was church treasurer for 29 years and was still one of the Sunday school teachers. He liked to relay these words of wisdom, “Make sure you know where you are going.” Ted has said many times how grateful he was for all the blessings he received, the bountiful rural way of life, the love of family and friends, and most of all, the love of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Preceding him in death were his parents; brother, Paul; and sisters, Venita Gray and Margaret Vaughn. Survivors include his wife, Barbara; daughter, Jean (Shorty) Wilson; sons, Norman (Beverly) Skinner and Duane (Lynne) Skinner; grandchildren, Shawn (Laura) Bray, Anthony Bray, Adam (Jessie) Skinner, Katy (Dillon) Daughenbaugh, Jessica Jones, Jim (Sarah) Skinner, Anne (Jerry) Yonker, and John Skinner; great grandchildren, Julianne and Jensen Yonker, Skylar Skinner, Haley Jo Bray, Amara and Martha Skinner; and other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services will be held at the High Point United Methodist Church at High Point, Iowa at 1 p.m. Saturday, February 22, 2020, with Pastor Rick Hawkins officiating. Burial will be in the High Point Cemetery. Arrangements were through the Slade – O’Donnell Funeral Home in Leon, Iowa.
Memorials may be given to the High Point United Methodist Church in Ted’s memory.
