Obituary – Stephen Lynn Paugh

Stephen Lynn Paugh, age 70, of Humeston, Iowa died on Friday, June 26, 2020, at Wayne County Hospital in Corydon, Iowa. He was born on July 6, 1949, in Cambria, Iowa, the youngest child of Lawrence Marvin and Helen Virginia (Burley) Paugh. He attended grade school in Cambria and Mormon Trail High School, graduating in 1967. He attended Indian Hills College in Centerville, Iowa, graduating in 1969, with his Associate’s Degree. Upon graduation, he began work on the family farm.

On June 9, 1973, Steve married Carla Sue Town at the Humeston Christian United Methodist Church. From this union, they had three sons, Andrew, Curt, and Jim. Steve was a big sports fan and very involved in the boys’ sporting activities including coaching their Pee Wee and Little League baseball teams and their elementary basketball teams. When he wasn’t coaching, Steve could be found in the stands supporting the boys and all of the Mormon Trail Saints’ teams.

Steve was an avid supporter of the Iowa Hawkeyes, Chicago Cubs, and the Chicago Bears, and enjoyed watching/arguing with the boys about what the teams needed to be doing in order to win. In his spare time, Steve enjoyed golfing at the Humeston Golf Course and was a proud member of the Fidelity Lodge #228. Steve was an active member of the Humeston Christian United Methodist Church and on most Sundays, he could be found singing in the choir.

Steve also worked for Greenlee Construction. He stopped farming full time in 1998, and joined Wayne County Mutual Insurance, where he worked until retiring in 2012.

In his later years, Steve enjoyed making a number of woodworking projects for the family out in his woodshop, as well as riding around the farm in his Ranger, and fishing down at Grandma’s Pond with his grandchildren. Of all the jobs he had, he loved the job of “Papa” the best. He and Carla also enjoyed traveling to Orlando, the Quad Cities, and taking cruises to the Caribbean and Alaska. He will always be remembered for his easy-going nature and his dedication to his family.

Steve is survived by his wife of 47 years, Carla of Humeston, Iowa; his sons, Andrew (Jaime) Paugh of Onalaska, Wisconsin, Curt Paugh of Conrad, Iowa, and Jim (Jennifer) Paugh of Ankeny, Iowa; three grandchildren, Trent and Zoey Paugh and Charles Paugh; brother, Carlos (Cheryl) Paugh of Humeston; many nieces and nephews; and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Kathleen, in infancy, and Karen Gillman; and brother-in-law, Lyle Gillman.

Funeral services will be held at the Humeston Christian United Methodist Church in Humeston, Iowa at 11 a.m. Friday, July 3, 2020, with Pastor Donna Murphy Ceradsky officiating. Burial will be in the Humeston Cemetery, at a later date. Arrangements were made through the Slade – O’Donnell Funeral Home in Leon, Iowa.
