Obituary – Stephen Alan Scholar

Stephen Alan Scholar, age 69, of Leon, Iowa, died on Wednesday, February 26, 2020, at the Decatur County Hospital in Leon, Iowa. He was born on May 25, 1950, in Manchester, New Hampshire to John and Flora May (Hicks) Scholar.

Steve grew up and attended school in New Preston, Connecticut. He joined the United States Army at 17, and served in Viet Nam. Around 1980, he moved to Wyoming and started working in the oil fields. He became friends with co-worker, Archie Owens, and his family. Over the years, Steve was a truck driver and lived in Florida and Connecticut before retiring and moving to Leon, Iowa in 2010. He and Archie enjoyed fishing at Little River Lake together. Steve also liked to bowl and loved his dog, Tink.

Preceding him in death were his parents; sister, Shirley Violette; and brother, Alfred Scholar. Survivors include his friend, Linda Owens of Leon, Iowa and her family; his son, Stephen C. Scholar of Murrells Inlet, South Carolina; grandsons, Sam and Patrick Scholar; siblings, Robert and Louise Jones and Sandra and Richard Hicks, all of New Brunswick, Canada and Sheila and Tim Horten of Arkansas; brother-in-law, Armand Violette and sister-in-law, Virginia “Ginger” Scholar, both of Bristol, Connecticut; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.




No local services are planned at this time. Burial will be in Connecticut at a later date. Arrangements were through the Slade – O’Donnell Funeral Home in Leon, Iowa.
