Obituary – Ruth Gwenevere Dale
Ruth Gwenevere (Flanagan) Dale, the fifth child of Johnny Pious Flanagan and Maymie Viola (Boyd) Flanagan, was born on March 6, 1925, and passed away peacefully January 9, 2019, at Westview Acres in Leon, Iowa.
Ruth grew up on a farm south of Pleasanton, Iowa. She attended Willis County School thru 8th grade then attended Pleasanton High School. She rode a horse to school and tied it up but several times, she would come out to go home and the horse was untied and gone home. It wasn’t till years later that a classmate told her he and the other boys would untie her horse because she always beat them when she raced them.
Ruth worked several jobs during her life; along with being a loving mother and homemaker she was a store clerk at Reeves Supply Store in Pleasanton and Pyfer’s Grocery in Leon, a janitor, acting postmaster, and worked at O’Bryan Brothers, a green house, a floral shop, and drove a truck for hire. Ruth often made trips to Centerville to get a load of coal.
After meeting Orville Eldon Dale, Sr. at a dance in Pleasanton she was courted and they married on March 27, 1943. To this union four children were born. Ruth and Orville moved to Dallas County, Iowa in the fall of 1943. Orville was called into Army in 1945. Ruth returned to the Pleasanton area till Orville returned home in 1946. They farmed for three years in Decatur County.
Ruth loved to sew for her girls when they were young. She even made wedding dresses, suits, and many other things for her grandchildren. She also did the flowers for her granddaughter’s weddings. She loved to crochet and make dollies, edging and make afghans. Ruth cooked and canned many jars of vegetables and fruit, always keeping the cellar full for the winter months. One of her passions was playing the guitar and singing. She and her sister-in-law, Mary, often sang at church.
Ruth and Orville enjoyed traveling and spent four winters in Texas and four winters in southern Missouri. In 2004, Orville and Ruth sold their homestead in Pleasanton and moved to Crown Colony in Lamoni, Iowa. She served on the residential council as President at Crown Colony. In 2016 with failing health they moved to Terrace Park Assisted Living in Leon, Iowa and then transferred to Westview Acres in 2017.
Ruth was a 50 plus year member of Queen Victoria Chapter of Eastern Star in Pleasanton. She also served on the Ladies Auxiliary at Lamoni. Ruth traveled to several Eastern Star conventions where she often wore her homemade dresses.
Ruth grew up in the Catholic faith and was a member of Saint Brendan’s Church in Leon. She married Orville and became a member of New Salem Baptist Church. In 1994, they became members of Trinity Christian Church and remained faithful members under longtime Brother and friend, Terry Roberts.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 75 glorious years, Orville; her parents; two infant sisters; brother, Harold and wife, Hazel, and their son, Michael; brother, Harley and wife, Sylvia; and granddaughter, Raginna Hamilton.
Survivors include son, Eldon and Sue Dale of Sigourney, Iowa; three daughters, Sharon and Keith Hamilton of Leon, Sherryl and Jim Vogel of Pleasanton, and Rhonda and David Stephenson of Tipton, Missouri; 13 grandchildren, Tammy, Ronnie, Johnny, Steve, Robert, Sherry, Melissa, James, Peter, Andrew, Lynnette, Brant, and Daniel; 29 great grandchildren; 20 great, great grandchildren; two great, great, great grandchildren; niece, Virginia and Curtis Madson of Independence, Missouri; nephew, John and Becky Flanagan of Carroll, Iowa; and other relatives and friends.
