Obituary – Mary Ann Leeper

Mary Ann Leeper was born December 3, 1930, to Isaac Macon and Nettie Mae (Ames) Nauman. She was the youngest of 10 children. She passed peacefully from this life on September 9, 2019, at Westview Care Center in Leon, Iowa, at the age of 88 years.

Mary Ann grew up on her parents’ farm in Harrison County, Missouri, and then in Leon, Iowa. She attended and graduated from Leon High School where she played basketball three years and was the Salutatorian of her Class of 1949. She also spent a couple of years of middle school in San Francisco, California, while her mother was caring for her sister Laura’s family during the war. While growing up in Leon, she came to faith in Christ as her Savior and was baptized April 10, 1949, in the Brethren Church. Later she became a member of New Salem Baptist Church.

After high school, Mary Ann was secretary for Attorney Roy Hawkins and later worked at the Soil Conservation Service. She was introduced by her nephew, Chester Warren, to his good Army buddy, Robert “Bob” Latham Leeper. The romance blossomed, and they were married March 16, 1952, at her mother’s home in Leon. Bob and Mary Ann lived and farmed north of Pleasanton having six children, Roger, Raymond, Rodney, Robert, Joy, and Jayne.

Mary Ann spent her married life raising children, growing a huge garden, helping with farm chores, being involved with the kids’ school and 4-H activities, and making sure the family was well-fed and clothed. She also worked many years outside the home as a CNA at Westview and then as a Home Health Aide for SCICAP. After retiring, she wrote the weekly “Pleasanton News” article in the Leon Journal Reporter for many years. This gave her the great excuse to keep her finger on the pulse of the community even after moving off the farm to Leon.

She seemed to draw the most pleasure in life from helping and cheering up folks around her, whether it was family, friends, or someone she may have just met. She did not want the spotlight on herself, but on others. Mary Ann did not shy away from strangers and always enjoyed engaging people in conversation to get to know them. It didn’t matter, young or old alike, she always had a way to break the ice. Most of the time, she would ask if they knew any good jokes. She loved to write poems for any occasion or celebration and gave them as gifts. Many people have received poems from her throughout the years. She kept copies of these poems in journals, which could serve as a timeline for her life. She also got a lot of enjoyment from playing various games, but her very favorite was Scrabble. Many times when someone would come to visit, the question would be raised if they were up for a game of Scrabble.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert; daughter-in-law, Anita; sisters, Clara Warren, Laura Enfield, Mabel Osborn, and Helen Wilson; and brothers, George, Ralph, Russell, Carl and Paul Nauman.

She is survived by her children, Roger, Raymond (Janet), Rodney (Melony), Robert (Ella), Joy (Rob) Poush, and Jayne Padgett; grandchildren, Aaron (Chandra) Leeper, Andrew (Kala) Leeper, Amanda (Ray) Newtson, BJ (Jodi) Leeper, Tyler (Jamie) Leeper, Jessica (Cole) Pape, Megan (Eric) Gross, Kylee Harting (Adam), Jennie (Ben) Karnish, Abbie Poush, Christopher Poush, Kyle Hutchison, Caleb (Hannah) Padgett, and Caiden Padgett; 18 great grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, and many other family members and friends.

Funeral services will be held at the Slade – O’Donnell Funeral Home in Leon, Iowa at 2 p.m. Sunday, September 15, 2019, with Pastor Dale Short officiating. Burial will be in the Hamilton Cemetery, Pleasanton, Iowa.
