Obituary – Margaret DonNell Joy
Margaret DonNell Joy passed away on September 3, 2019, at the age of 92. She has found her space in her Lord’s mansion with many rooms.
DonNell (as she preferred to be called) was born September 6, 1926, to James Harvey and Halah Mae (McVey) Crawford in rural Wayne County, Iowa. She was the third of six children and had a full and busy life growing up on different farms in the county. After high school, she attended Simpson College and obtained her teaching credentials. She taught at Brown Jug and Maple Grove, one-room schoolhouses in Wayne County.
In 1946, she met Hugh Bert Joy from Humeston on a Fourth of July blind date set up by her brother. The two fell in love and were married on August 17, 1950. DonNell moved to Wisconsin to be with him as he did his Army service. They returned to Iowa in 1952, with their new daughter, Kathrine. They lived on a few different farms, raising corn, beans, oats, cattle, and hogs, and adding Carl and Barbara to the family. DonNell did substitute teaching at Mormon Trail classrooms as the kids grew up. Through the years, DonNell loved growing flowers, collecting rocks, listening to music, dancing, her children, and Hugh.
In 1974, DonNell learned to drive a semi-tractor rig and went on the road with Hugh. They enjoyed working and traveling together for 16 years until they retired from driving. After her retirement, DonNell enjoyed her church, her garden, her grandchildren, and her great grandchildren. She was active in Humeston United Methodist church for 61 years. She was a Sunday School teacher, a member of the Administrative Council, a Bible School teacher, an active member of the Women’s Society, a part of Tuf Team, and a regular attendee of Sunday Services. She enjoyed her time in service to the Lord. She was also a long time member of the Rebecca Lodge.
DonNell is survived by her children, Kathrine Louise and Ronald Gibbs of Chino Valley, Arizona, Carl Bert Joy of Humeston, and Barbara Colleen and Mark Hewitt of Humeston; her grandchildren, Anthony Scott (Kari) Gibbs of Chandler, Arizona, Nathan Joshua (Thera) Storm of San Diego, California, and Kayla Beth (Jody) Seaman of Lakewood, Colorado; and great granddaughters, Breanna Lorene Guilford (daughter of Kayla) and Carlisle Joy Storm (daughter of Nathan). She has one surviving brother, James Crawford of Des Moines, Iowa and one sister-in-law, Carol Crawford of Garden Grove, Iowa. There are also numerous nieces and nephews across the country and countless friends.
DonNell was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Hugh; two sisters, Virginia Auxier and Betty Helt; two brothers, Robert Crawford and Kenneth Crawford; three sisters-in-law, Mary Baker, Mary Crawford, and Marie Crawford; and three brothers-in-law, Gerald Baker, Russell Helt, and Maurice Auxier.
DonNell was loved by many, and all of them will miss her. We celebrate her joining her Lord and Savior in Heaven.

Visitation will be at Slade – O’Donnell Funeral Home in Leon on Monday, September 9, 2019, from Noon to 8 p.m. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Humeston Christian United Methodist Church on Tuesday, September 10, at 10:30 a.m. with interment at the Humeston Cemetery following the service.
