Obituary – James William “Tot” Boswell

James William Boswell, age 89, of Lamoni, Iowa, the son of Hosie Leroy “Roy” and Alma Deane (Osborn) Boswell, was born February 2, 1931, at Cainsville, Missouri. He died at his home on Saturday, June 13, 2020.

Tot, as he was known since a child, attended school in Lamoni. Late in his teen years, he took a train to Wyoming to be a cowboy and work on a ranch. It was there he saw his first rattlesnake. A year or two later he returned to Lamoni and did various jobs. He married Arnetta Madeline Woods on July 30, 1950, in Sinking Spring, Ohio. They were blessed with three children, Lynda, Michael, and Tamara.

In 1955, at age 24, Tot took a risk, borrowed the money, and built the Boswell Grain Elevator in Lamoni. Later he opened one in Humeston and in Davis City, Iowa. In 1972, at age 45, he sold the business. He and two other partners started Triple B Spraying Service, which he operated until he was 61 years old, when he retired to be able to do the things he enjoyed. He participated in rodeos, cutting with his horse, team roping, and teaching high school students and his grandsons how to rodeo. He and Arnetta enjoyed dancing and singing, traveling, and time with the family.

Tot loved the outdoors, especially fishing. He loved to tell stories of life experiences to an audience, especially around the table after a meal. He was not shy and could strike up a conversation with anyone and everyone. He loved to have fun, eat good food, and was always the life of the party. Tot was a very generous man and was his daughters’ hero, never missing a Valentine’s Day or a chance to show them how much he loved them. He also loved animals and raised registered quarter horses and many other animals over the years.

Over the years Tot was a member of the Iowa Cutting Horse Association, Decatur Restoration Branch in Decatur City, Iowa and was on the Citizens Bank Board in Blythedale, Missouri for 33 years.

Preceding him in death were his parents; wife, Arnetta in 2011; two brothers, Clarence Boswell and Kenneth “Fritz” Boswell; two sisters, Nina “Tillie” Cook and husband, Jim and Sue Slauter and husband, John; and sister-in-law, Jennifer Boswell.

Survivors include his children, Lynda Dallyn and Cecil Essix of Chandler, Arizona, Mike and Mary Boswell of Canyon, Texas, and Tami and Dan Taylor of Oskaloosa, Iowa; grandchildren and spouses, Clint and Delisa Boswell, Jesseca and John Jackson, Levi and Rachel Taylor, and Lincoln and Alyssa Taylor; great grandchildren, Jaret Campbell, Bray and Brylee Boswell, Jett and Case Jackson, Merrick and Maddox Taylor, Owen and Cloey Waterbury, and Diesel Howser; brother, Morris Boswell of Lamoni; sisters-in-law, Lori Boswell of Missouri and Opal Armstrong of Ohio; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and many friends.

Graveside funeral services will be held at the Rose Hill Cemetery, Lamoni, Iowa at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 20, 2020, with Elder Jon Barney officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery. Arrangements were through the Slade – O’Donnell Funeral Home in Leon, Iowa.
Memorials may be given to the Decatur County Hospital Auxiliary in Tot’s memory.
