Obituary – Glenys Mae Mitchell

Glenys Mae Mitchell, age 89, of the Derby and Humeston, Iowa area was born September 25, 1930, in Wayne County, Iowa to Alva and Easter Floy (Abel) Williams. She died at the Corydon Specialty Care Center in Corydon, Iowa on Tuesday, January 14, 2020.

She attended country school and then graduated from Humeston High School in 1948. She married Warren Walter “Mitch” Mitchell on March 4, 1951, at the Humeston First Baptist Church in Humeston, Iowa. They were blessed with two children, Nancy Ellen and John Warren.

Glenys loved her family and her Lord. She was a faithful steward of the First Baptist Church in Humeston. She always helped in any way she could. She was an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary, P.E.O. Chapter AN, Eastern Star, and Rebekah’s. She enjoyed being a wife and mother. She attended all of her kids’s Mormon Trail School activities. In later years she worked as a clerk at the Derby Post Office and then worked at Snyder’s Variety Store in Humeston with family and friends.

Preceding her in death were her parents; siblings and spouses, Rex Williams and wife, Pat, Reva Snyder and husband, Hoyt, and Virginia Vandell and husband, Kenneth; husband, Warren “Mitch” Mitchell; sister-in-law, Marian Barger and husband, Ivan; mother-in-law, Bonnie Snook and husband, Bert; nieces, Rosemary Jefferies and husband, Jim, Susie Ecklund, and Mary Kay Lightford; and nephew, Dennis Jones. Survivors include her daughter, Nancy Carey and husband, Rex of Seymour, Iowa; son, John Mitchell and wife, Maureen of Overland Park, Kansas; nephew, Doug Williams and wife, Linda, and family of Carterville, Illinois; niece, Jill Tueth and husband, LaVern of Humeston; nephew, Tracey Vandell and wife, Barb, and family of Humeston; niece, Kim Vandell and wife, Vickie and family of Des Moines, Iowa; and many other relatives and friends.




Memorial services will be held at the Humeston First Baptist Church in Humeston, Iowa with Pastor Ron Barker officiating. Burial will be in the Derby Cemetery, Derby, Iowa at a later date. Arrangements were through the Slade – O’Donnell Funeral Home in Leon, Iowa.
Memorials may be given to the Humeston First Baptist Church in Glenys’s memory.
