Obituary – Gene Louge Stewart

Mary Emmagene (Louge) Stewart, passed Wednesday, April 29th, 2020, at Westview Acres in Leon, Iowa at the age of 102 years. Gene was born May 19, 1917, in Dalton, Missouri to Lee Fisher and Nellie Marion (Elarton) Louge.
Gene grew up and attended school in Albia, Iowa where she graduated in 1934. She attended nurses training at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa and graduated in 1938, whence she moved to Leon, Iowa and began working for Dr. Norman Doss at the Decatur County Hospital. Gene met husband John Cowl “Jack” Stewart and married on December 25, 1939, in Albia, IA. They had a family of five children, Stephen, Robert, William, Suzanne, and James. Gene was a loving mother and wife and took immense pride in her family. During World War II, she continued her nursing service while maintaining her work and joy in motherhood. She assisted with the Stewart Funeral Home and Furniture Business for many years until they were sold. She was a gracious and kind host always welcoming to all. She found joy in celebrating and throwing parties of all kinds alongside Jack at their home on South Main Street.
Gene was proactive in the Leon community taking interest and priority in developing and maintaining Decatur County’s local health and recreation organizations and public social facilities. She remained active in P.E.O., and was president of the Leon Park Board. Gene advocated for The American Cancer Society as well as The American Heart Association. She was awarded Leon Citizen of the Year in 1978, the first woman to be selected. She was titled Outstanding Woman of the Year by the Leon Business and Professional Women’s club. Gene was also a longtime member of the Leon Presbyterian Church, working closely for many years to preserve and beautify the church structure.
Gene assisted in starting the Decatur County Home Health Program in the 1960’s, where she trained homemakers in the agency as the county public health nurse and helped to initiate the Meals on Wheels program.
Gene loved to play golf and bridge amongst friends as her favorite pastimes as well as travel and spend time with her family. She set the highest example of love and acceptance for all through her unwavering dedication to bettering the community at large.
Preceding her in death were her parents and sister Katherine, husband Jack Stewart, and children, Steve Stewart, Bob Stewart and his wife Marilyn. Gene is survived by her children Bill (Carolyn) Stewart of Chicago, Illinois, Suzanne Stewart of Tucson, Arizona, Jim (Julie) Stewart of Glen Ellyn, Illinois, her daughter-in-law Mary Stewart of Council Bluffs, Iowa, her grandchildren, Dan (Alyson) Stewart of Park Ridge, Illinois, Dave (Stephanie) Stewart of Denver, Colorado, Jacqueline Stewart of Chicago, Jessica Stewart of Chicago, Luke Stewart, and Sadie Stewart, both of Denver, and her great grandchildren, McAllister, Louge, Hugh, and Cole Stewart.
Gene was interred on Friday, May 1, 2020, at the Leon Cemetery. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at a later date.
