Obituary – Donna Janice Petty

Donna Janice (Vanderpool) Petty, age 79, was born April 13, 1940, to Raymond Forrest “Lefty” and Lois Pauline (Campbell) Vanderpool at Leon, Iowa. She died at her Leon, Iowa home on February 16, 2020.

She was born in Decatur County, Iowa and attended Leon Schools. While growing up she met Charles Petty. They hit it off and they started dating. In March of 1956, Charles left for California to serve in the military. He came back in October and swept Donna off her feet. They were married on October 12, 1956, in Leon. To this union were born two children, Terri Pauline and Chris Milton. She was also blessed with two grandchildren she adored, Brittini Ann and Trae Milton.

The couple lived in California until 1959, when they returned to Leon to make their home. Donna was a wife and a stay at home mother and also cleaned the Leon Christian Church. After the kids were grown, she got a job in the kitchen at Leon Care Center. She continued there until it closed. Then she worked at Pamida until she retired.

After retirement she enjoyed watching hummingbirds on her front porch and all the happenings in the neighborhood from her living room chair. She became a pro at mixing up her homemade slush. One time there was an issue of her tasting it and when Chris came in to check on her, she was just a little bit tipsy. He asked her how much she had tasted, her shot glass had become cup sized. Needless to say he informed her she better quit tasting. She collected dancing Santas and two-dollar bills. She clipped every newspaper article with anything to do with her grandchildren. She also enjoyed listening to Mollie Bee’s music.

Later they got their border collie, Nicky, who became their loyal companion. When Charlie and Terri had to go out of town, Nicky would stay behind to take care of Donna. Nicky stayed by her side until they returned. She was Donna’s baby and when Terri came in the house, it wasn’t where’s your dad, but “where’s Nicky?”

Preceding her in death were her parents and Charlie’s parents. She leaves behind to cherish her memory, husband, Charlie Petty of Leon, Iowa; daughter, Terri Petty of Leon; son, Chris Petty and wife, Evelyn of Leon; granddaughter, Brittini Petty and fiancé, Joe Fisher; grandson, Trae Petty; and other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services will be held at the Slade – O’Donnell Funeral Home in Leon, Iowa at 1:30 p.m. Friday, February 21, 2020, with Pastor Ron Helton and Rev. Max Carmichael officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery, Lineville, Iowa.
