Charles James Porter, age 86, of Leon, Iowa died at Westview Acres in Leon on Saturday, May 16, 2020. He was born to Charles Edward and Kathryn Helen (Freilinger) Porter on March 23, 1934, in Decatur, Iowa.

Charlie, as he was known, lived his early childhood with his family in various places in the United States. When he was school age, the family settled in Decatur, Iowa for him to attend school. He graduated from Leon High School in Leon, Iowa in 1954. On June 2, 1954, he entered the United States Air Force. He served as a radar technician in Thule, Greenland. He was honorably discharged on April 27, 1956.

On June 2, 1957, Charlie married Bernice Louise Roush in Decatur, Iowa. They were blessed with three children, Gregory Allen in 1958, Rhonda Lee in 1960, and Kathryn Elizabeth in 1975. The family lived in Decatur, where they farmed and operated the Decatur County Speedway and Porter’s General Store. Later Charlie did maintenance work for Decatur County Hospital in Leon and Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa. After he retired from Graceland he did custodian work at the Interstate 35 rest area in Decatur County. Charlie never said no to anybody in need of help; he always went when called. This practice made him many friends and kept him busy.

Over the years in his free time, Charlie enjoyed fishing, gardening, and coon hunting. He volunteered for Habitat for Humanity traveling to Honduras twice. He also enjoyed tending to his chickens in later life.

Preceding him in death were his parents; wife, Bernice Porter; sister, Mary Ann Elliott; and son-in-law, Larry Lane. Survivors include his children, Greg and Lisa Porter, Rhonda Lane, and Kathy and Lonnie Cowden, all of Leon, Iowa; grandchildren, Lance and Athena Porter, Ethan and Caysi Porter, Gideon Porter, Miranda and Brent Marvin, Chris and Micheala Lane, Jaycee Cowden and Graydon Vanderflught, Kip Cowden, Josie Cowden, Kaige Cowden, and Kason Cowden; 12 great grandchildren; sister, Donna Fulton of Leon; sister-in-law, Alta Graham of Davis City, Iowa; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
