OBITUARY - JERRY  RUSSEL  RYAN

Jerry Russel Ryan, age 75 of Osceola, Iowa, the son of George Robert "Bob" and Maxine Noah (Simmerman) Ryan, was born July 21, 1936 at Van Wert, Iowa.  He died at the Lucas County Hospital in Chariton, Iowa on Monday, July 16, 2012. 

Jerry walked and later rode his pony to country school near Van Wert.  He then attended Weldon High School.  His senior year he attended Osceola High School and played football.  After high school he married and was father to three children, Kent, Kelly, and Denise.  He worked various places including, owning and operating the Dairy Queen in Osceola, working for J.C. Penney in Osceola before transferring to Davenport, Iowa and then St. Louis, Missouri.  In Rockford and Marengo,  Illinois, he was a car salesman.  He owned and operated an auto paint and body repair business in Cocoa Beach, Florida.  He employed both his son, Kelly, and daughter, Denise, there.  Later he operated a Bed and Breakfast and helped with the care of many foster children, while living in Oak Hill, West Virginia.  He moved back to Osceola, Iowa to help with his parents during their final years.  While there he operated the Bait Station, selling fishing bait and pet supplies.  He leased out the Station and retired in 2008.  While free time was limited, Jerry enjoyed fishing and hunting deer, pheasants, and quail.

He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, and aunts and uncles.  Survivors include his children, Kent Ryan and wife Debbie of Hartford, Iowa, Kelly Ryan and wife Kusum of Pleasant Hill, Iowa, and Denise Christman and husband Michael of Waukee, Iowa; ten grandchildren, Amanda, Danielle, Alisha, Drew, Hannah, Kari, Anna, Katie, Roshni, and Abihisek; sister, Linda Lutzen of Ft. Wayne, Indiana; two nieces; and other relatives and friends.




Memorial services will be held at the Slade - O'Donnell Funeral Home in Leon, Iowa at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 21, 2012 with Rev. Max Carmichael officiating.  Burial will be in the Van Wert Cemetery, Van Wert, Iowa.

    I wish to express my sympathy to all of Jerry's familyfor your loss. 
    I got acquainted with Jerry while he ran the bait shop, and I enjoyed our visits.  He was always generous and supportive of the Conservation Board, donating bait for the youth fishing programs
